Many clients come to me specifically to record great live drums.

The examples on this page are here so you can hear what I actually capture before and mixing or processing. Great drum recording starts with the source, the room, the drummer, and knowing how to capture all of it properly.

There are many factors that affect your drum sound:

• The actual sound, design and condition of the drum kit

• The age and condition of the drum heads

• The tuning of the heads

• The room

• And most of all — the drummer

If any of those are weak, the drum sound will be weak. No microphone, preamp, plugin or sample library can completely fix that after the fact.

My job is to make sure that when the performance is right, the recording captures the impact, tone, depth and personality of the kit.

These drum examples include different styles, kits and players so you can hear how the room and recording approach translate across real sessions.
